Pearl Harbor IMA team receives ‘Commanding Officer's Award for Excellence’
The team was honored for certifying a record number of torpedoes last year while optimizing its inventory to make every propulsion unit in their shop available for assembly. By securing all necessary components, the team achieved full readiness, meaning its propulsion system inventory was fully stocked and ready to be built into working torpedoes.
The team also exceeded its production goal for the year and its historical average.
The award nomination praised the team's exceptional performance, noting that its "direct, hands-on support to the submarine force has resulted in monumental and record-breaking achievements that have significantly enhanced the combat readiness of the U.S. Submarine Force."
This accomplishment is a result of successful collaboration between the IMA's maintenance, quality and supply teams, together with the recent implementation of a new system for tracking and securing parts.
“Hitting [our production targets] is a massive [achievement],” said IMA Production Manager Chad Colburn. “That tells me that our workforce didn't just work faster; they worked with absolute precision.”
Deputy IMA Manager Joseph Bumatay echoed this praise.
“It’s a complete team effort here at the IMA,” said Bumatay. “Our folks just put their nose down and kept going.”
The team accomplished this feat while also completing numerous exercise torpedo turnarounds, executing multiple short-notice airlift operations, and installing critical hardware and software upgrades a significant number of Fleet torpedoes.
The IMA earned three additional honors last year: achieving an “Excellent” rating in four of six of the graded categories on its Torpedo Certification Examination Board inspection, securing a first-of-its-kind 18-month certification and becoming the first-ever recipient of the Lockwood Award for excellence in maintaining heavyweight torpedoes.
TCEB certifications are normally granted for one year; the extended certification was part of a new initiative to reward commands that demonstrate sustained superior performance, and the Pearl Harbor IMA was the first torpedo IMA to receive it.
“Earning this 18-month certification is a huge milestone for our team,” said IMA Quality Manager Jo Ann Viloria. “It proves that we don't just put on a show when the inspectors are in the building— our quality is real, day in and day out.”
Looking ahead, IMA leadership sees this recent success as a “new benchmark.”
“If we keep the deckplate disciplined, trained and supported, there is no limit to what this team can accomplish,” said Colburn.
